Thank you for pointing that out. I’m in the Guard and was thinking today about what all the Guardsmen who would typically be in my morning formation do during the rest of the month. Teachers, IT, engineers, maintenance, farmer, contractors, business owners, college students, cop, etc. This is our neighborhood, too. And we face the same issues as a general society because we are general society. They’re in uniform. Approved wear only. So, more than likely, they weren’t provided surgical masks from their higher element or didn’t receive the order to wear them. Their unit ought to have full gas masks for each of No Justice No Peace Style Shirt them. But, again, they’re not passing them out or keeping them on their person unless specifically ordered. There’s the intimidation factor too. Wearing gas masks can make people think teargas will be used.

The system was a human being who was being shot at. Don’t humanize the protestors and think that we members of the National Guard are just mindless robots out there ‘sticking it to you for the MAN.’ We’re members, physically members of every community we’re called out to act in. At any given point and time, we will face people we know. We don’t want to. None of us actually want to be there; the Military doesn’t belong in the American streets. So please, keep protesting. And turn in those who would take your message and weaponize it. Those who are grabbing bricks or instigating fights. My first political theory class ‘the military is to fight the enemy of the people.’ Deploy the army inside the No Justice No Peace Style Shirtnation’s borders for wildfires, floods, terrorists, sovereign nations armies attacking, absolutely.

Thank you for pointing out that the National Guardsmen have a choice in whether or not they act on orders to assault citizens in American cities. That guy was right, they’re not robots so they should prove it by being men and defying unjust orders. With all due respect, and as a former Marine I truly do mean all respect, Shouldn’t you take your oath seriously and disobey a direct order to infringe on people’s right to protest? I am all for protecting against looters like during Hurricane Katrina but people are mad at the government and you are being used to quell that anger. If I was called upon to crush an anti-government uprising I would back down because my oath was to the No Justice No Peace Style Shirt people, not the state protests in Flint, MI (I know, right?) were an amazing example of how the police can affect change within their departments and prevent violence. I can’t imagine how it had to feel to be a black protester and have the Sheriff say, “You know what? We WILL walk with you”.
