For those wondering the painting is Perfect Teofimo Lopez The Four-Belt Champ Shirt War Cripples (Kriegskrüppel) by Otto Dix, 1920. Dix, a German, was himself a veteran of the Great War. The progression of his work from pre-war, to wartime, to post-war is interesting, to say the least. Later on, the Nazis designated Dix as one of the degenerate artists. As one of the main points of their ideology was starting pointless wars of aggression and genocide, having someone paint works as these were unacceptable. War Cripples was destroyed by the Nazis and now it only survives in sketches and photographs.
Perfect Teofimo Lopez The Four-Belt Champ Shirt, Tank Top, V-neck, Sweatshirt And Hoodie
The photo was taken by Swiss photographer Perfect Teofimo Lopez The Four-Belt Champ Shirts Werner Bischof of a veteran in Asakusa in 1951. He’s wearing a white hospital gown to reiterate his disability. It wasn’t uncommon to see people like this into the mid-seventies. Nothing so interesting, I’m afraid. The front says “Music (born) from a wounded man. Everyone, please help.” I’m not entirely sure about the first sentence, but am very confident about the second. The writing on the side says something similar about music and asking for help. As far as I can tell the Japanese characters on the front are: I can’t make out the first line on the side, but it’s definitely different from that on the front, while the second line appears to be the same on both the front and side.
